Deep-Sea Robot Lost at Sea
A deep-sea exploration robot - one of the first successful submersible vehicles that was both unmanned and untethered to surface ships - was lost at sea Friday, March 5, on a research expedition off the coast of Chile. The 15-year-old Autonomous Benthic Explorer, affectionately nicknamed ABE, was launched late on the night of Thursday, March 4, and had reached the seafloor to begin its 222nd research
New Survey Vessel Delivered to Fugro
On March 12, 2010, Fugro took delivery of a new-build survey vessel, the M/V Fugro Searcher, which it commissioned in 2007. The vessel will operate in the offshore oil and gas industry and the offshore renewable energy sector. It will be able to carry out the full range of site and route survey tasks to obtain the high resolution data necessary for safe, efficient and cost-effective planning, design
Statoil: Increased Oil production from Oseberg
"We have carried out extensive modifications to the process facility on the Oseberg Field Center and removed a bottleneck for increased oil production," said Torstein Hole, area manager for Operations West in Statoil. The modifications enable the recovery of an additional 20 million barrels of oil from Oseberg. This corresponds to a value of nearly NOK 10 billion at the current oil prices. Total investments in Oseberg low-pressure production were NOK 1 billion.
Ashtead Technology Chooses Phins
IXSEA announced the sale of two PHINS 6000 subsea inertial navigation systems (INS) to Ashtead Technology. The systems are destined to be used by a major ROV operator for work in the UK North Sea starting in early April. PHINS 6000 is a subsea INS that provides position, true heading, attitude, speed and heave data. The high-accuracy inertial measurement unit is coupled with an embedded digital signal processor that runs an advanced Kalman filter.
Reson Launches Low-Cost Multibeam
Reson debuted a new cost-efficient sonar which it says bridges the gap between singlebeam echosounders and high resolution multibeam sonar systems. HydroBat is an entry-level multibeam system operating at 160kHz and covers a swath of 120°. “A task that used to take a week with the old singlebeam echosounders, takes only three days with this new multibeam HydroBat,” said Rich Lear, Reson. HydroBat was demonstrated during Oceanology International 2010 in London.
